Peter Diamandis, founder of Xprize, has introduced the Future Vision Xprize, a $3.5 million competition aimed at inspiring filmmakers to create optimistic science fiction stories. This initiative seeks to counteract the current trend of dystopian technology narratives by promoting hopeful visions where technology acts as a force for good.
Diamandis attributes much of his career inspiration to the hopeful future depicted in "Star Trek," which showed humanity and technology working together. Noticing that many recent sci-fi stories focus on technology-induced disasters, he aims to encourage narratives that motivate innovation and positive change.
The contest is supported by notable figures including Rod Roddenberry, Marc Benioff, Cathie Wood, and Google, highlighting a collaborative effort to merge storytelling with technological advancement. Participants are encouraged to use AI tools but must maintain human creativity, as fully AI-generated content is unlikely to win.
Submissions opened in early March and close in mid-August. Entrants submit three-minute trailers that will be publicly viewable and commentable on YouTube. Finalists receive funding to produce ten-minute shorts, with the grand prize winner awarded $2.5 million for feature film development and a cash prize.
Diamandis hopes this contest will become a recurring event that fosters an "exponential mindset," empowering people to see the future as an opportunity rather than a threat. This mindset encourages proactive engagement with technological change.
Enterprise leaders and innovators can draw inspiration from this initiative to envision and promote positive technological futures within their own organizations. The Future Vision Xprize represents a unique intersection of creativity, technology, and optimism.
