Rivian’s Suspension Probe Puts EV Service Quality in the Spotlight

Rivian is facing a federal safety investigation that reaches beyond one component and into a much larger question for the electric vehicle sector: can fast-scaling automakers maintain service quality as their fleets mature? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation is examining reports of rear suspension failures on Rivian R1 vehicles after two owners described sudden loss-of-control events while driving. The issue centers on the rear toe link, a suspension part that helps keep the wheel properly aligned and stable. According to the investigation summary, Rivian identified in March 2025 that the rear toe link had sensitivity to certain service procedures. Rivian has said safety is a top priority and that its data shows R1 toe link joints operating as intended, while also noting that one vehicle had been handled by a third-party repair facility.
