Microsoft keeps Anthropic Claude alive for everyone except the Pentagon

Microsoft told TechCrunch it is not ripping Anthropic Claude out of Microsoft 365, GitHub, or its AI Foundry marketplace. Only one customer loses access for now: the Defense Department, after labeling Anthropic a supply-chain risk because the startup refused to build mass surveillance and autonomous weapon tooling.

That designation is extraordinary because it forces every prime or sub doing Defense work to certify whether Anthropic is in their stack. Microsoft’s lawyers say the ban applies only when Claude is part of a contract that flows directly to the Pentagon. Everyone else can keep shipping products on top of Claude, and Microsoft will keep co-building models with Anthropic for non-defense workloads.

If you run aviation, critical infrastructure, or defense-adjacent programs, this is a narrow but real window. You must maintain a clean-room AI posture for every deliverable tied to Defense funding while still exploiting Claude’s strength everywhere else. Expect contracting officers to ask for written attestations about model provenance long before they ask for another SOC 2.

Our team is already mapping those attestations into controller agents: policy bots that look at every build pipeline, verify whether Claude touched the code path, and generate the paperwork your compliance and capture teams will need. We are also carving separate inference lanes so federal workloads can switch to alternative models without rearchitecting an entire product line.

If you have a Defense contract, or you sell into Defense primes, now is the time to harden that separation. We will help you carve the controls, prove to DCMA that Claude is not in scope, and keep your commercial builders running on Anthropic without pausing roadmap velocity.
