Google's Epic truce opens the door for custom Android stores

Google just put real numbers behind its truce with Epic Games. The Play Store headline fee is dropping to 20% (plus 5% if you keep Google Billing) and Fortnite is cleared to return, provided Epic keeps investing in its own Android store. That is a seismic shift for anyone who ships mobile software into regulated or high-friction environments.

The bigger play is Google’s new Registered App Stores program. Approved third parties will be able to run their own curated stores with a streamlined install flow instead of the current sideloading gauntlet. To get in, you have to meet Google’s security and UX standards, but once you pass review you can finally deliver trusted apps without scaring users away.

Google is phasing this in fast: EEA, U.K., and U.S. developers get the 20% fee and the new programs by June 30, 2026, with Australia in September and Korea/Japan by year end. Global rollout wraps before October 2027. Developers who join the new incentive programs can push the take rate down to 15% on transactions from fresh installs.

For construction, aviation, defense, and public safety clients, that means you can justify standing up your own app distribution stack again. An internal store that combines hardened telemetry apps, supplier tools, and field inspection utilities can now compete economically with the Play Store while preserving your zero-trust posture.

Hitman Technologies is already mapping this with customers: controller agents that verify every build, package it for a Registered Store submission, and light up policy-based access across MDM, identity, and audit trails. When Google opens the doors, your crews will see a branded, compliant storefront instead of APK spreadsheets.

If you want that ready before the June 2026 window, loop us in now. We will design the operating model, line up the compliance evidence, and make sure your finance team understands how the 20%/15% economics flow into your budgets.
